Starting Shiitake Mushrooms

  • Friday, April 18, 2025, 1:30 PM - 3:00 PM

Have you ever wanted to grow your own mushrooms using only what nature has provided? Store-bought kits can be fun, but there is a way to start your mushrooms using either maple or oak logs called “bolts”. Eventually in 6 to 8 months (yes, it does take a long time), you will be able to harvest mushrooms from the inoculated bolt.

Come learn about the art of starting Shiitake Mushrooms on Friday, April 18th at 1:30 pm at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Training Center in Warrensburg, NY. Connor Youngerman, a mushroom specialist from Cornell University will be explaining the process of growing Shiitake Mushrooms, along with demonstrating how to inoculate a bolt and there will be plenty of time for questions and answers.

This event is open to everyone and is free unless you want to take home one of the inoculated bolts to keep. Only 20 bolts are available if you would like to purchase an inoculated bolt, the cost will be $20. Please indicate at the time of registration if you would like to purchase a bolt. Register by calling 518-623-3291 or by emailing Barb at bdg92@cornell.edu or Michele at mlb222@cornell.edu.

Special thanks to SFH Enterprises for providing the logs (bolts).
